Joyce Griggs

Joyce Griggs is the Democratic nominee for U.S. Congress in Georgia’s 1st District. She is a U.S. Army Lt. Colonel (Retired / Served 33 Years) who served in Iraq and as an intelligence officer. While serving in the U.S. Army, Joyce earned the Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal (with 3 stars), and the Parachutist badge. As Georgia’s 1st District next Congresswoman, Joyce Griggs will be an advocate for affordable health care for all Georgians, strongly support working families, and fight for justice and equality for all.

Joyce Griggs is a retired member of the United States Army. Use of her military rank, job titles, and photographs in uniform does not imply endorsement by the Department of the Army or the Department of Defense.

Working to ensure that her messages reach the right ears comes naturally to Joyce Griggs. As the sixth of ten children in a sharecropping family, she developed an undeniable drive to be heard. Whether in the field or in the classroom, she focused on getting the most out of every experience, learning well the lessons each would teach—of tenacity, resilience, and possibility. It’s with this same focus that she has managed to navigate life’s challenges in a spirit of promise and excellence. Now Joyce plans to take that spirit to Washington to fight for the citizens of Georgia’s 1st Congressional District, giving you the voice you deserve.

For decades, Joyce has consistently distinguished herself as a warrior. In both military and civilian arenas, she’s battled to defend those in her charge. She’s fought for our country as a U.S. Army lieutenant colonel, honorably leading and receiving the highest commendations as an intelligence officer. Among her many decorations, medals, and badges are the Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service, and Global War on Terrorism Service medals, and the Parachutist badge. As a dedicated Savannah-based attorney, Joyce represented the best interests of Georgians from an array of backgrounds. Her commitment to providing a substantial number of services free of charge earned her the Georgia Legal Services Pro Bono Award. Also, her competence won her the State Bar of Georgia’s Chief Justice Robert Benham Professionalism Award.

Long before becoming a decorated veteran and honored trial lawyer, Joyce wore the badges of insight and persistence. Since the days she worked her way through North Carolina Central University and John Marshall Law School, she’s had a keen understanding of what successfully taking on seemingly insurmountable challenges requires. That’s why she’s consistently approached life’s hurdles with steady vision, measured steps, and distinctive endurance.

Seasoned by listening to and working to supply the needs of others in communities at home and abroad, Joyce is well prepared to champion the struggles of everyday Georgians. Drawing on a wealth of experiences, from her own rural roots to her engagements in the global arena, she’s equipped to articulate district constituents’ needs at the highest levels.
